This piece features the eclipse of the sun and moon. The sun and moon represent the feminine and masculine complimentary forces. Serpents are highly revered for their protection of peyote and corn. The Huichol believe rain itself consists of millions of small snakes. Peyote is the plant of life. Peyote is the sacred medicine consumed to communicate with the spiritual world. It is represented by green buttons and antlers. Candles represent the sacred gift of light from the Sun and Fire god. Fire is a treasured gift from the gods. Fire is believed to be the Huichol’s eye into the future.
Yarn paintings consist of yarn pressed into wood coated with wax.
The Huichol are an indigenous people who mostly live in the mountainous areas of northern Jalisco and Nayarit in north central Mexico.
