Beautiful square Huichol yarn painting representing the offerings used in their ceremonies like god’s eyes, arrows, feathers, and antlers. These yarn paintings are known to the Huichol as a nierika, a portal between the physical and spiritual worlds. They represent the metaphysical visions of the shaman during their healing ceremonies.
Yarn paintings consist of yarn pressed into wood coated with wax.
The Huichol are an indigenous people who mostly live in the mountainous areas of northern Jalisco and Nayarit in north central Mexico. This particular one was made by Esteban Benitez Torres of Tepic, Nayarit.
